To count one’s chickens
before they’re hatched is to assume that
some benefit is coming even if the cause
of such benefit is still unsure to happen.
(‘Don’t count your chickens before they are hatched’ is also used.)
“Uncle has drawn up a will bequeathing to me
half of his wealth. My friends say I
should begin planning what to do with the money, but I don’t want to count my
chickens before they’re hatched.”
